A Letter To My Jericho Family

Dear Jericho Family,

It is with humility and excitement that I announce my candidacy for the Jericho Board of Education; I consider it a privilege to run and it is a task I do not take lightly.

A little bit about me: I grew up in the UK and graduated with a BSc (Hons) degree in Economics from the London School of Economics. I began my career in Corporate Finance and have since spent 20 years working for Fortune 500 companies, leading global teams, managing significant budgets and championing continuous learning. For the last 3 years, education has become more central to my purpose as I was nominated to the Board of Trustees of WHIN, a music-focused public school in Washington Heights. Within a year, I was promoted to Vice-Chair and have enjoyed honing my board governance skills along with nurturing my passion for music.

This community is very dear to me for multiple reasons. Over the thirteen years I have lived in Jericho, I have found strength in connections with neighbors, friends, staff and students. Whether through PTA leadership, JAA events, district committees, board meeting participation or simply meeting people on walks, I have cherished every single interaction that I have had and grown tremendously as a result. My neighbors, especially, have stood by my family and I in good times and bad, and I have endeavored to do the same for everyone around me. I remember speaking at a BOE meeting several years ago, highlighting that Jimmy and I initially came here because of the ranking but stayed because Jericho is so much more than that. It is an inclusive, warm and welcoming family of which I am proud to be a part.

If elected to the Jericho Board of Education, I am committed to the EXCELLENCE that we have come to know and love about our district. My goals are to:

  • Lead with EMPATHY, create connections and prioritize safety for all students, families, administration and staff

  • Adopt a kids-first, whole-child philosophy in everything we do, prioritizing our students’ mental, physical and academic wellbeing

  • Continue to invest in innovative programming, especially music education, new sports offerings and mentoring programs focused on practical skills, while exercising fiscal restraint

  • Make sound decisions that reflect the voice of our diverse community. Preserve integrity, balance and inclusion

I would very much appreciate your support on May 21st and look forward to meeting you in the coming weeks. If you have any questions or feedback, please reach out to me via “shewarforjerichokids” on Facebook, Instagram, Gmail or my website. I welcome the ENGAGEMENT.

Warmly,
Shewar.
